2021 Golf for Fun

Bumwad golfers are in dwindling supply. Many have given it up because the game is so frustrating at times... okay, frustrating much of the time. However, all it takes is a good shot every now and then to bring the Wads, pictured here, back to the beautiful courses. Just like that old farmers' saying that, "Even a blind pig gets a kernel of corn now and then"... similarly "A not so great golfer gets a good shot now and then!"  In team golf, when you take not so great golfers and only use their best shots, wala, you have Bumwad golfing for fun!

In most sports when a team plays sub-par it's not a good thing, however in golf it's a good thing. Luckily we were playing the right sport to have a sub-par performance! Came in one below par for the entire round.. our best of the season. Some professional golfers close their eyes when putting to concentrate without distraction. D Wad decided that, if that is good technique, then he'd try it for the full round!
2 of 4 > After G Wad's great fairway shot on a par five, he is seen here putting for an eagle! (FYI- We settled for a birdie... but that's okay)
3 of 4 > Mags Wad demonstrating ultimate concentration on the ball before sending it on its way.
4 of 4 > M Wad demonstrating beautiful follow through to fully enjoy the shot even though the ball is already well on its way towards the green!

October 14 @ Highland in St Paul

It was windy and overcast for the first nine... and the disappointed but hopeful Wads were two over par. But the sun came out for the second nine and the Wads picked up a stroke so that they were one over par heading into the par 4, 18th hole. Could they rally and go even par for the day? A fantastic approach shot by MWad left the ball on the fringe of the green in two strokes. GWad sunk the 25-foot putt for a birdie, bringing the Wads to even par for the day! The photo above shows the 18th hole flag in the distance and three happy Wads!

Had great fun taking turns at being good... that's what team golf is supposed to be. Came in a respectable two over par on the front nine.
Last hole of the day - A long par 4 with narrow fairway nestled between two linear water hazards and a trick dog-leg left over water near the end for direct access to the green. We got to three feet from the pin in TWO SHOTS! Sunk the put for a birdie. Good way to end... we'll be back, hoping to pick up where we left off... unfortunately, golf doesn't work that way!
September 16 @ Brookview
Beautiful day for golf. However, it was a bit windy with gusts up to 30 miles an hour! No problem for this fearsome foursome that still managed to shoot a respectable 77 in team golf. D Wad ridiculed Russel Wad for a bad shot and then proceeded to shoot the exact same bad shot... oh golf what a crazy game!
August 26 @ Brookview in Golden Valley
Two teams of three each. Only played nine holes due to pending rainstorm on its way. Didn't score as well as we do most of the time. Probably was due to the rapidly dropping barometric pressure for the imminent storm... at least that is the most plausible excuse for our not up to par play today... it couldn't have been our fault.
August 12 @ Brookview
Michael Wad played most of the round, but had to leave early, leaving these three amigos for the group photo. Unfortunately, these three look like they're representing an African country! If MWad could have stayed for the photo he could have saved the Wads from this debacle!

Impressive scorecard for the Wads

June 17 - Three Wads… Two Teams

Only three Wads showed up for today’s golf at Brookview in Golden Valley, but even so, a great contest ensued. We divided into two teams: Mags & D Wad on one team against M Wad on the other. The odds makers picked it to be a close contest.

To make things interesting, we wagered a mythical $1000 per hole.

At the turn, after nine, we were dead even and decided to have a beer to prep for the back nine. With five holes remaining, Mags & D Wad were up by $3000 and looked to be the day’s big money winners. However, M Wad came on strong over the next four holes such that they were tied going onto the 18th tee box. Both teams were on the 18th green in three. At half-way across the green, M Wad was furthest from the pin so he putted first. Nice putt, but not in the cup yet. Mags & D Wad sunk their 20 foot putt to win the hole, the game, and the mythical $1000!  Drive for show, but putt for dough!  Fun day on a new course!

June 10 - The freshman class of 2021 playing at Gross National in 100 degree heat index weather... we call it Hot Golf. Due to the high heat, they wisely changed the longtime Bumwad tradition of playing in the afternoon to play in the relative cool of the morning instead. Who said old men can't change?
